Mayumi Hosokura’s ‘NEW SKIN’ is a stunning photo-sculptural series looking into men, women, and the intricate relationship between them. Using still images as well as video, Hosokura investigates questions of identity, gender, and sexuality. Deeply inspired by the American thinker and biologist Donna Haraway, a pioneer of ‘cyberfeminism’, she chose to focus on how people view the bodies of men, by photographing images from gay magazines and sculptures from art museums — things that have always inspired her in her ways to represent the body. Along with other images, she used these photographs to create a series of digital collages. Dismantling and recomposing the human body, she tears apart accepted notions of gender, and brings up questions around human desire and identity. Subverting classicism and conservatism, her collages are works of art that each convey different feelings and emotions.

Co-curated by Pauline Vermare, Independent curator and photography historian (formerly cultural director of Magnum Photos and curator at ICP, New York) and Co-founders/Co-directors of KYOTOGRAPHIE, Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi. Through the series shown in the exhibition, we see a reflection and perspective distinctive to each photographer, whether they are living and working in Japan or abroad. These powerful images will be presented in a scenography that embodies the KYOTOGRAPHIE spirit and gives each artist her own customized space, thanks to versatile and sustainable structure, conceived by Kyoto-based designer and architect Hiroyasu Konishi.
This exhibition is supported by Women In Motion, a Kering program that shines a light on the talent of women in the fields of arts and culture. Since 2015, Women In Motion has been a platform of choice for helping to change mindsets and reflect on women’s place and recognition across artistic fields.
Mayumi Hosokura
Born in Kyoto Japan and living in Tokyo/Kyoto. Hosokura reorganizes boundaries regarded natural between organism and mineral, human and animal, human and machine, also nationalities and races, based on sexuality and gender. Graduated faculty of literature, Ritsumeikan university and Graduated institute of photography, Nihon university of Art. Selected publications: “NEW SKIN” (2020, MACK), “Jubilee” (2017, artbeat publishers), and “Transparency is the new mystery” (2016, MACK). Selected solo shows: NEW SKIN (2019, mumei, Tokyo, JP) and JUBILEE (2017, nomad nomad studio, HongKong, HK) etc. selected group shows: Reflected-works from the Foam collection (2014, Foam Photography Museum, Amsterdam, the Netherlands).
