‘Zaido’ is Yukari Chikura’s first extensive body of work. Published by Steidl in 2020, it has been widely acclaimed. Following a series of tragic events, including her father’s sudden death, serious accidents, and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Chikura recalls that her father came to her in a dream with the words: ‘Go to that village hidden deep in the snow where I lived a long time ago.’ She took a camera and went on a pilgrimage to northeast Japan. There, dealing with memories and loss, she followed a 1,300-year-old ritual practice and created this beautifully poetic series. Chikura came to photography from the world of music. One can sense her past life in this series : it feels like a deeply immersive environmental experience. ‘Zaido’ is an exquisite tribute to her father, and to photography as a tool for healing. With her work, Chikura invites us to reflect on traditions, grief, and overcoming the difficulty of carrying on.

10/10 Celebrating Contemporary Japanese Women Photographers

Co-curated by Pauline Vermare, Independent curator and photography historian (formerly cultural director of Magnum Photos and curator at ICP, New York) and Co-founders/Co-directors of KYOTOGRAPHIE, Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi. Through the series shown in the exhibition, we see a reflection and perspective distinctive to each photographer, whether they are living and working in Japan or abroad. These powerful images will be presented in a scenography that embodies the KYOTOGRAPHIE spirit and gives each artist her own customized space, thanks to versatile and sustainable structure, conceived by Kyoto-based designer and architect Hiroyasu Konishi.

This exhibition is supported by Women In Motion, a Kering program that shines a light on the talent of women in the fields of arts and culture. Since 2015, Women In Motion has been a platform of choice for helping to change mindsets and reflect on women’s place and recognition across artistic fields.

Yukari Chikura

Yukari Chikura, born in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from university of music, she became a music composer, arranger and programmer. She is the Winner of STEIDL BOOK AWARD and her work ZAIDO was published by STEIDL in 2020. (ZAIDO was selected as “Best Photo Book 2020” of Photo-eye, VOGUE, LensCulture, PhotobookStore, 1000 Words, All About Photo.com, Vanity Fair among others). She won LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards 2016, 2020 IPA International Photography Awards: Book / Other (1st), LUCIE PHOTOBOOK PRIZE, Sony World Photography Awards, Photolucida Critical Mass TOP50 2016 & 2015, Julia Margaret Cameron Award (1st), National Geographic among others. Her works have been collected in The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Griffin Museum and Bibliotheque nationale de France, she has exhibited in numerous shows all over the world. Her work was selected as “FOTOFEST Discoveries of the Meeting Place, “IPA Best of Show photographer 2013” (Lucie Foundation). She was an artist in residence of Rokko International Photography Festival 2015. She gave a lecture at Tokyo Zokei University. She participated in “RPS Photobook Masterclass”, “Review Santa Fe 2014” and “Eddie Adams Workshop 2014”. She was nominated “Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2021”. Her work was published by NY Times, Guardian, Financial Times, Vanity Fair, NOWNESS, Vice Magazine among others.
ZAIDO is a work that followed people who overcomes various difficulties to carry on traditional culture.
I continue to shoot under the theme of hope born out of despair.
